Instrumental Duets for Guitar
The guitar makes a great accompaniment instrument for instrumental duets with a melody instrument. If you are interested in playing with other musicians like this the collections below will give you a great repertoire for playing with flute, violin, or harmonica. Build your accompaniment skills and repertoire and you will always be in demand by instrumental players.
The guitar and the flute have been musical companions for a long time and in many parts of the world. They make excellent sounding duets that can be played in numerous styles.

The fiddle is another instrument that works well with the guitar. It has been widely used in many styles of folk music. The song books below give you several styles to try.

The harmonica is an ever popular instrument that has often been associated with the guitar in folk, rock and blues. Give your rock guitar skills a workout with these titles.
* Pop Rock Favourites For Harmonica, Bobby Joe Holman, Hal Leonard
Seventeen pop rock hits arranged for harmonica with guitar chords and tab. Pretty Woman, Blueberry Hill, Yakety Yak and Runaway are among the titles in this collection.

You’ll have far more people wanting to play with you than the guy playing flashy guitar leads.

70 Concert $20.98 This European compact disc reissues Canned Heat’s Live Concert 70 (1971), which was released as Canned Heat Concert (Recorded Live in Europe) (1970) in the U.K.. The short-lived lineup heard here features Bob “The Bear” Hite (vocals), Alan “Blind Owl” Wilson (guitar/vocals/harmonica), Larry “The Mole” Taylor (bass), Aldolfo “Fito” de la Parra (drums), as well as Harvey Mandel (guitar), who had replaced Henry “Sunflower” Vestine (guitar). Arguably more significant, however, is that these are among the last gigs with Wilson. Sadly, less than six months later, he overdosed prior to the Heat’s fall 1970 European outing. The tour captured on this platter was spawned by the unanticipated success of the combo’s cover of Wilbert Harrison’s “Let’s Work Together” — taken off of the album Future Blues (1970) — which became their most successful side throughout Europe. With Mandel driving the band instrumentally, there is an incremental shift towards more jammed-out interaction and completely rearranged melodies. This is immediately exemplified by the loose and funky “That’s All Right Mama.” Alternately, Wilson’s dark visage is evident on the lonesome and harrowing “Pulling Hair Blues,” or the improvised “London Blues,” a number likewise marked by his biting bottleneck slide guitar solos and haunting off-key vocals. Although the track list portrays it as a medley, “Back on the Road Again” bears little in common with the “On the Road Again.” Rather than, at the very least, a verse from both songs being played, the latter is only alluded to. The live reading of “Let’s Work Together” is as vivacious as the original, with the Heat going all out for their appropriately appreciative audience. ~ Lindsay Planer, Rovi |

American Folk Blues Festivals 1963-1966: The British Tours [DVD] $15.99 Like the previous three volumes of this superb series, American Folk Blues Festivals 1963-1966: The British Tours presents about 75 minutes of mid-’60s European television performances by blues legends. The only real difference is that all of these were filmed in England (hence the subtitle “The British Tours 1963-1966″), where appreciation of the blues was really taking off and, of course, making a big impression on the U.K. pop scene via artists like the Rolling Stones and Eric Clapton. While the word “legends” is thrown around a lot in reviewing vintage blues compilations, this is one instance where it’s not overhyping the case. Every single performer here is legendary. Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, and Sonny Boy Williamson were Chicago blues giants,; the more rural and rawer side of the form is caught by Lightnin’ Hopkins and Big Joe Williams; R&B is represented by Big Joe Turner, and soul by Sugar Pie DeSanto; and the blues’ roots in jazz and gospel are captured by Lonnie Johnson and Sister Rosetta Tharpe respectively. Every single performer here is caught, in well-preserved black-and-white footage, at or near the peak of his or her form, sometimes with some of their very most famous songs, whether it’s Waters doing “Got My Mojo Working,” Williams playing “Baby Please Don’t Go,” or Williamson singing “Bye Bye Bird.” That’s not even mentioning the top talents that can be seen as accompanists at various points, including bassist Willie Dixon, guitarists Hubert Sumlin and Otis Rush, and pianists Sunnyland Slim and Otis Spann. As for the most unusual and colorful performances, perhaps Williamson wins on that account — though not by much — by playing one end of a harmonica without holding it, as if he’s chewing a cigar. Also novel is Junior Wells’ 1966 performance of Ray Charles’ “What’d I Say,” delivered (and danced through) in modified James Brown fashion; it might not be the song you most associate with classic blues (or even Wells’ blues), but it’… |

Excerpt: Bob Dylan (born Robert Allen Zimmerman; May 24, 1941) is an American singer-songwriter and musician. He has been a major figure in popular music for five decades. Much of his most celebrated work dates from the 1960s when he was at first an informal chronicler, and later an apparently reluctant figurehead of social unrest. A number of his songs such as “Blowin’ in the Wind” and “The Times They Are a-Changin’” became anthems for the civil rights and anti-war movements. His early lyrics incorporated a variety of political, social and philosophical, as well as literary influences. They defied existing pop music conventions and appealed hugely to the then burgeoning counterculture. Dylan has both amplified and personalized musical genres, exploring numerous distinct traditions in American songfrom folk, blues and country to gospel, rock and roll and rockabilly, to English, Scottish and Irish folk music, embracing even jazz and swing. Dylan performs with guitar, keyboard, and harmonica. Backed by a changing line-up of musicians, he has toured |

Bad Man’s Blood $17.98 For decades, bluesman and songwriter Ray Bonneville worked day jobs while playing his songs in coffee houses and house parties at night, eventually earning a place on international festival stages with Muddy Waters and Bukka White long before he had a recording contract. Since 1993, Bonneville’s issued a host of recordings of consistently high quality. 2008’s Goin’ by Feel, produced by Gurf Morlix, scored him a number one at Americana with “I Am the Big Easy,” his tribute to New Orleans (Bonneville lived there before relocating to Austin). Bad Man’s Blood was co-produced with Justin Douglas and Morlix (electric, baritone, and bass guitars and banjo), percussionist Mike Meadows, and saxophonist Dexter Payne, in various combinations. Bonneville plays an amalgam of acoustic and electric guitars, harmonica, and his trademark foot stomp. The blues songs — the poetic, narrative title track (inspired no doubt by hardbitten characters from Gothic American fiction) to raw, skeletal, electric snaky rhythm constructions like “Mississippi,” that addresses the Delta’s tradition in his playing and the horrors of the river flooding in its historical story line. “Night Walker” is a spooky 12-bar, too, but in its acoustic, minor-key architecture, it feels more like a tango. Elsewhere, “Sugar and Riley” has more New Orleans R&B in it, especially with its strolling sax lines and shuffling percussion. “Good Times” and “River John,” though very different songs in feel and melody, come from French Canadian and Cajun folk melodies. “Darlin’ (Put Your Suitcase Down),” with a beautiful harmony vocal by Morlix and his slow, pulsing bassline, offers Bonneville a supporting tightrope to walk on the most vulnerable love song he’s written. “Blonde of Mine” is acoustic Cajun blues at its best, and there are few as good at it as Bonneville. There are no clich? s, just the heart of the music’s grain. “Crosses and Flowers” is knife-edged in its narrative tension. Morlix and Bo… |
