Sony BDP-S570 Blu-ray Player Review
Once 3D Blu-ray Players were announced for the upcoming year, most people thought that it would only be the higher end models in the $400 plus range that would have this feature. But Sony has recently stated 3D firmware upgrades will be available to all of it’s Blu-ray Players starting from the BDP-S470. This will make the BDP-S570, which is already a fantastic Blu-ray Player, even better.
Sony has succeeded in making the BDP-S570 look polished and streamlined. The front panel is a glossy black with an indentation along the front bottom where the panel controls are located. A USB port is also located on the front, giving you easy access. All other input and outputs are on the rear of the Blu-ray player. The control panel buttons are a combination of touch sensitive controls and physical push buttons.
Video Quality: Features such as x.v.Color™ Technology and 24p True Cinema™ Technology help provide the best possible picture on Blu-ray playback. The BDP-S570 can be connected via HDMI, component video or composite video outputs located on the back of the Blu-ray Player. HDMI, as always, will give you Full HD 1080p Output. You can also view movies through streaming online content. Sony has included a feature called I/P Noise Reduction in the BDP-S570. This improves the picture quality of online video streaming content; making sure the images are crystal clear on your HDTV.
Audio Quality: The BDP-S570 has great audio quality and features. There are HDMI, optical digital audio out, coaxial digital audio out and 2 channels analog audio outputs on the rear of the Blu-ray Player. Unfortunately, there are no analog 7.1-channel audio outputs. But its Audio DAC (192kHz/24bit) and internal audio decoding for Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Digital Plus and DTS-HD provides you with a great High Definition sound.
The BDP-S570 has all of the set of features you expect to find in a mid-level Blu-ray Player. It has built-in Wi-Fi( 802.11n), DLNA compatibility and access to online streaming services. This includes Netflix, Amazon Video On Demand, YouTube, Pandora, Slacker and Picasa/Flickr. (DLNA, Pandora and Picasa/Flickr will be available later through firmware upgrade). It also has 1 GB of internal memory so it is more convenient to take advantage of BD-Live content. You will not require the use of a USB memory flash drive.
There are many other great features found on the BDP-S570. One is the “BD Remote” app. This is a free app you can download to transform your iPhone or iPod touch into a remote for the Blu-ray Player. Allowng you to access movie information and search movie related topics. Another nice feature on the BDP-S570 is the Gracenote Metadata Service, which gives you quick, detailed data about the movies you are enjoying. Then there is the Quick Start/Quick Load feature. This makes the BDP-S570 one of the fastest Blu-ray Players ever.
The big feature that will separate the BDP-S570 from most mid-level Blu-ray Players is its 3D capability. Being able to enjoy 3D Blu-ray disc movies in Full HD 1080p may appeal to many. This firmware will not be available until summer of 2010, so there is no way to comment on its performance. However, it is the only Blu-ray Player model in its price range to offer 3D Blu-ray disc playback compatibility.
THE PROS: The Sony BDP-S570 has excellent picture quality and will be 3D Blu-ray compatible in the summer of 2010. It has online streaming services such as Netflix, Amazon VOD, YouTube and Slacker. Built-in Wi-Fi and 1 gb of internal memory, makes it easier to use streaming services and access BD-Live content. Also has internal audio decoding for Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Digital Plus, DTS-HD and can playback Super Audio CD.
THE CONS: Unfortunately, you will have to wait for some of the Blu-ray Player’s features (Pandora, DLNA, and 3D) to become available through firmware updates. There are no analog 7.1-channel audio outputs.
THE FINAL WORD: If you do not mind waiting for firmware updates the Sony BDP-S570 is a great Blu-ray Player. It is packed full of features and has excellent image and audio quality. It’s operational speed is exceptionally fast. Once the BDP-S507 has all of it’s features, you should not be disappointed in it’s performance. –Price you should look for when purchasing — Under $250.00

Black Hawk Down [Blu-ray] $26.99 A quickly forgotten chapter in United States military history is relived in this harrowing war drama from director Ridley Scott, based on a series of Philadelphia Inquirer articles and subsequent book by reporter Mark Bowden. On October 3rd, 1993, an elite team of more than 100 Delta Force soldiers and Army Rangers, part of a larger United Nations peacekeeping force, are dropped into civil war-torn Mogadishu, Somalia, in an effort to kidnap two of local crime lord Mohamed Farah Aidid’s top lieutenants. Among the team: Staff Sgt. Matt Eversmann (Josh Hartnett), Ranger Lt. Col. Danny McKnight (Tom Sizemore), the resourceful Delta Sgt. First Class Jeff Sanderson (William Fichtner), and Ranger Spec. Grimes (Ewan McGregor), a desk-bound clerk getting his first taste of live combat. When two of the mission’s Black Hawk helicopters are shot down by enemy forces, the Americans — committed to recovering every man, dead or alive — stay in the area too long and are quickly surrounded. The ensuing firefight is a merciless 15-hour ordeal and the longest ground battle involving American soldiers since the Vietnam War. In the end, 70 soldiers are injured and 18 are dead, along with hundreds of Somalians. Black Hawk Down was voted one of the top ten films of the year by the National Board of Review prior to its limited Oscar-qualifying release. On the basis of his work in this film, co-star Eric Bana, a relatively unknown Australian actor playing Delta Sgt. First Class “Hoot” Gibson, won the lead in director Ang Lee’s version of The Hulk (2003). ~ Karl Williams, Rovi |
