Blues alto sax scale and riffs?
What are The Blues scales for alto sax and some blues riff?(If that’s how its called)
The so-called blues scale is a hybrid between the pentatonic minor and its’ parallel dominant arpeggio. I’ll cite the G blues scale as a user-friendly example: G, Bb, C, C#, D, F.
G pentatonic minor: G, Bb, C, D, F
G7 arpeggio: G, B,D, F
If you want to get a handle on how to do this in other keys, let’s analyze the above using scale tones.
Blues scale: 1, b3, 4, #4, 5, 7
G pentatonic minor (relative to Bb major): 6, 1, 2, 3, 5
G7 arpeggio: 1, 3, 5, 7 (but note that G7 isn’t based on G major; rather, it’s on C major. If you want to use the scale tones as they appear in C major, the results would be 5, 7, 2, 4)
Try playing the blues scale up and down and I’m sure you’ll hear some familiar licks. Once these are under your fingers, try playing along with some recordings so your ears will develop.
