About love Advice and Looking for Answers
Throughout time writers have written about it, musicians sung about it, and folk talk about it … that’s the
magical power of LOVE
. Whether it’s the broken hearted soul singing The Blues, or someone whose just been swept away by that oh so powerful sea of passion. Pretty much everyone agrees love is so very, very – GOOD!
OK, so we’re in agreement, being in love is like one of the best natural feeling rushes there is. Now I’d like to talk a little about enhancing that great natural buzz called love, and some ways that you can do this with your lover every day.
Firstly, there’s that amazing indulgence called food. And hey I’m not saying you have to be Master Chief here. Just simple stuff like taking a few of you and your lover’s favourite’ s and creating a platter to enjoy, maybe with some wine to accompany you both on a weekend picnic, an indulgent movies night, beach day, cycling, tramping, or any other fun and romantic adventure you can think of.
And if you do happen to be a gifted individual in the kitchen – well you can create that whole 3 or 4 course dinner experience once or twice a week, where just you and your special one can practice the magical art of togetherness.
The point here is just how utilizing a few of life’s other good things can enhance your relationship passion tenfold. Another relevant point would be that even if you’ve never done a special dinner or gone on a picnic, or had an indulgent movies session, etc. before with your lover? Often, just suggesting & trying new stuff together is the biggest part of the adventure – which increases passion on its own.

Find out what scents your lover likes; go get yourself some great fragrant oils, maybe a scented candle or two for mood lighting. Set up some of that favourite music you know get the juices flowing on the stereo – and enjoy the simple art of sensual touch, that a nightly massage can bring to your relationship.

(Re)Conception $19.98 Helen Sung has made great strides since winning the 2007 Mary Lou Williams Piano Competition. Recruiting two of the most in-demand rhythm players for this trio date, bassist Peter Washington and drummer Lewis Nash, the pianist mixes things up with fresh arrangements of standards, time-tested jazz compositions, and a few less frequently played works. Her swinging take of Duke Ellington’s “C Jam Blues” begins with a playful exchange with Washington before launching into the familiar theme, with the walking bass and light percussion propelling her inventive improvising as she avoids the clich? d route through this jazz standard. She also offers a snappy midtempo setting of the maestro’s “Everything But You,” playfully incorporating “Things Ain’t What They Used to Be” before she turns on the afterburners in her superb solo. Her punchy take of George Shearing’s “(Re)Conception” reveals the potential of this neglected bop gem. Thelonious Monk’s “Teo” is another overlooked piece, though Sung transforms it into a rapid-fire Bud Powell-flavored romp. Jerry Bock’s “Far from the Home I Love” (from the musical Fiddler on the Roof) is not typically heard much on jazz record dates, but Sung delivers a sentimental yet shimmering interpretation. Her bright rendition of Burt Bacharach’s “Wives and Lovers” puts the spotlight on the talented Washington for an extensive solo. 1,000 Kisses $9.99 Patty Griffin’s third album, her first material to be released since 1998 (the absorption of her former label, A&M, in the Polygram-Universal merger left an album Griffin cut in 2000 in the vault, where it’s sadly likely to stay), strikes a stylistic middle ground between the stark voice-and-guitar approach of her debut, Living with Ghosts, and the eclectic textures of Flaming Red. 1,000 Kisses was mostly recorded live in the studio with a small acoustic band, including Doug Lancio on guitar and mandolin, Brian Standefer on cello, Giles Reeves on vibraphone and percussion, and Michael Ramos on accordion; the feel of the performances is close and intimate, with the occasional cough or footfall audible in the background, and these sessions capture more than a bit of the cin? ma v? rit? mood of Living with Ghosts. But if the album’s production style is subtle, it’s also a superb match for the material, and without forcing their hand, Griffin and the musicians can sway from the life-on-the-street swagger of “Chief” to the Latin romanticism of “Mil Besos” to the torchy late-night blues of “Tomorrow Night” without missing a step, finding a broad emotional spectrum in these low-key sessions. And while 1,000 Kisses finds Griffin blending covers in with her own compositions for the first time, she proves to be a first-rate interpretive singer (her version of Bruce Springsteen’s “Stolen Car” actually improves on “the Boss”‘ original), and her own songs are splendid, especially the moving widow’s lament “Making Pies” and the moody lead-off track “Rain.” And regardless of who wrote the material, Griffin’s voice — a tower of strength capable of expressing remarkable emotional vulnerability — remains a wonder to behold. 1,000 Kisses finds Patty Griffin at the top of her game, and one can only hope we don’t have to wait four years for the follow-up. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi |
